FREISA
Once cultivated on the hills between Asti and Turin, where it may be reasonably supposed to have originated it was also grown on a wide scale in the Canavese and Biella districts, the Upper Novarese, Saluzzo, Pinerolo, Ivrea and Susa, as far as Lake Maggiore. This rugged, very rustic variety readil adapts to different areas of cultivation. It provides a regular and abundant supply of grapes for harvesting toward the end of September. It has a good resistance to peronospora and late hoar frosts. Freisa grapes are only used for vinification. The wines they give are very robust and were once blended with weaker, feebly coloured wines. Common in the provinces of Asti Alessandria, Turin and Cuneo, Freisa is typically grown in the Chieri dish and the hills stretching from the right-hand bank of the Po towards the Asti area to the South and Casale to North-East.
