CORTESE
![]()
This is another white-grape variety about which very little is known for certain. It appears in the records at the end of the 17th century and probably originated in the province of Alessandria, around Novi and Tortona. It is a vigorous variety, with a constant abundant yield. It is primarily suitable for the production of wine, though its grapes make a very good showing at the table. Now as in the past, Cortese is widely cultivated in the province of Alessandria, on the hills around Acqui Ovada and Tortona, and between Gavi and Novi Ligure, where it reaches the peak of its quality. It is also found in the Asti district, and as an occasional companion of White Muscat in the Langhe.
