GRIGNOLINO

This variety takes its name from the dialect word used in the Asti district for the pips (grignole) that abound in its grapes. It, too, appears on record for the first time thanks to Count Nuvolone, who mentions it in "Instructions on the cultivation of the wine and the way of making and storin wines(1799), to which reference has already been made. Nothing is known for certain about its origin, nor even when its cultivation first began. The general opinion is that it originated o the hills between Asti and Casale which is still the area where it gives th best results in terms of quality. This is a vigorous variety with a good resistance to disease. Its yield is fairly regular when grown in its traditional areas. Its grapes ripen at the beginnin of October and are solely used to make wine.
